But if you love experimenting with things, observing habitats, or making mods (which this game makes trivially easy to do), then Starbound might just be your dream come true, and for this reason I give it an upvote, as it serves its purpose extremely well. If you don't like either of those things, don't touch this game.

I'm not a fan of grindy, running-around-getting-things type of games, yet I still love Starbound because whenever I'm bored, I just mod the literal sh*t out of it and see what I can do. Mods are, quite literally, the only thing that makes this type of game fun for most people, including myself. I play mostly action games, like Titanfall 2, Doom, 20XX and FAST. That said, people who do not enjoy endless grinding or studying new worlds will not enjoy this game as it is without mods. Where Terraria focuses on exploration as a means of progressing combat, Starbound puts it front and center similar to No Man's Sky or Empyrion. This is what distincts the game largely from Terraria. Exploration is at the core of the gameplay, with the sandbox environment being the second main focus. It puts a massive emphasis on exploring, as exploring is required to progress your character, the story, and more. Now, the game itself isn't anything too special. This game is very GPU heavy despite its simplistic graphics style. Additionally, while the graphics look pixelated and charming, unlike Terraria, you WILL need a good GPU.

That being said, the game's last update was somewhat mediocre and the mods are the only thing keeping it alive, something I'll elaborate on later in this review. The developers quit after not receiving pay (or so I was told). First of all, I should probably address the elephant in the room: this game is officially abandonware.
